HORMONES vs CALORIES

· They BOTH matter!

To lose weight, you must be on a calorie deficit diet. To burn fat, you need both a calorie deficit diet as well as the correct metabolic hormone balance.

· Imagine if your hormones are all balanced, you will feel the need to ingest less food and the calories will burn naturally. WIN!

· Imagine an engine that is able to choose which fuel to burn, fat or sugar.

-Fat can drive your body for long distances but doesn't provide much performance.

-Sugar delivers exceptional performance on a dreadful mileage.

· Protein.

This needs to be broken down into sugar before the body can use it, meaning that muscle tissue can be a significant source of sugar energy in certain people.

· How you exercise and what you eat determines which hormonal messengers are triggered to burn either fat or sugar.

· Rest-based training is a new philosophy developed by the metabolic effect. The person working out is allowed more time to rest during the actual workout, resulting in harder and better movements during workout sets. Rest & work during training are co-dependent. Together, they deliver far better results that, if paced, are achievable.

LISA's testimonial

Mother and Baby in Autumn

''After having a baby I felt my body completely changed and I no longer understood why I was not able to gain control over my weight. Denise was excellent in explaining and helping me understand the huge amount of shift in my hormones that came along after having a child.

I no longer needed to try and cut calories and workout endlessly in order to get results! I was able to workout for just 30 mins (plus her online accessibility and on demand services work great for busy mums) and go for leisure walks with my little one, whilst eating according to what my body needed.

Denise taught me to understand my body's signs and signals and how to tackle lifestyle changes in order to support my hormones and my body. I finally feel less pressure around weight loss and whilst I might not be getting a full nights sleep due to the little one, I have much better energy, moods and less post natal anxiety. Thank you Denise''

''I felt so safe and comfortable working with Denise. She is super approachable and helped me get through my peri-menopause stage as well as preparing myself for menopause. She helped me understand my body, my hormones and support it which much better nutrition, by eating according to my burner type and as well to moving my body in a way that works for me. Thank goodness I found a place that I can workout with a challenge but avoids crazy intense sessions.

I would highly recommend her if you are looking for help. Both her online & in studio worked for me!''

I must admit, it did take me a while to get to terms with my weight issues and understand my PCOS... At first I could not relate one to the other, especially given that I have always eaten healthy, at least to my knowledge!

Then a colleague had told me about this private studio she was going to, where she felt safe enough, no glaring lights and loud music with people pumping iron... And I thought to myself that there was nothing for me to lose if I'd just give it a try.... The thing is, I have always been very wary of gyms, always shy of entering these huge places full of people... But then I set the appointment with Denise from DNG Fitness, and as soon as I entered, it felt welcoming... Even the place itself was not daunting, something that makes a difference for a person like me...

During the consultation I told Denise about my PCOS and other medical issues and she took them onboard from day 1. I started PT sessions with Denise, where she planned our weekly sessions, careful to build stamina and balance.

After 3 years I was feeling good about myself... I'm not saying I lost 20kgs! But the very fact that I was feeling good and more confident spoke volumes.

Then I opened up to Denise about my frustration, that albeit eating healthy and exercising regularly, the kilos wouldn't budge, and she took the time to explain how my PCOS caused hormonal imbalance which in itself caused weight gain, or rather a difficulty to lose weight.

Following various sessions, Denise recommended switching to metabolic rest based training. While I loved our primal flow sessions and knew I'd miss them, I took onboard the metabolic training and will not be looking back! I love the challenge this kind of training brings with it... It's a challenge to listen to your body, know when to stop to rest, as stressing your body beyond it's max can only increase cortisol levels, which end up storing fat! It is through these metabolic rest based training sessions that I've learnt what my strengths and weaknesses are, and Denise targets our sessions to work on them. I also signed up to her Hormonal Reboot 8 week program which I learnt so much from and was great to access it all online and in the safety of my home during lock down.

Trust me when I say I wouldn't be writing this if I didn't believe it... But from a person whose only idea of exercise was a brisk walk, I've now come to look forward to my sessions and know that only by controlling my hormones can I live comfortably... I've learnt that hormones control us in more ways than 1! My hormonal imbalance caused me this feeling of being uncomfortable around the tummy area all the time... Now I've seen a change in my mood levels and how comfortable I feel in my own body... and for me, that is what counts the most!
